Today, we have the incredible opportunity to sit down and chat with Tommi Thompson, one of the high-performance athletes and 2022 Natural Olympia. 

In this compelling interview, we'll get to know Tommi better and delve into his journey, motivations, and advice for aspiring bodybuilders.

Venerando: It's a pleasure to have you here, Tommi. Can you tell us a little about yourself and where you're currently based?

Tommi: Thank you, Venerando. My real name is Ariel Thompson, but I go by Tommi. I'm 42 years old, originally from the Bronx, NY, and currently living in Okinawa, Japan, serving in the US MARINES.

Venerando: That's fascinating. What initially inspired you to pursue bodybuilding?

Tommi: My biggest motivation comes from seeing the incredible physiques of guys like Phillip Ricardo Jr., Meshack, Kyoshi Moody, and other natural bodybuilders on stage. Their hard work and dedication show me that if I put the effort in, it will pay off in the end.

Venerando: What has been the most rewarding moment in your bodybuilding journey so far?

Tommi: The support and motivation I receive from those around me and total strangers who've seen my pictures or videos on social media are incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I inspire others is humbling, especially when I think about how I started as someone inspired by other individuals in the sport.

Venerando: Can you tell us about your last bodybuilding competition and how you performed?

Tommi: I competed in November 2022 in Las Vegas. I was up against some truly impressive athletes, but I managed to place first in both the men's open and men's masters classes .

Venerando: Congratulations on your achievements! How are you preparing for your upcoming shows this year?

Tommi: Thank you. I'm currently training at Okinawa's best gym, Fogo Gym, as I prepare for three more shows later this year.

Venerando: How important do you feel diet and nutrition are when training for a competition?

Tommi: Diet and nutrition are major factors when presenting your best package on stage. If your diet and nutrition are off, it will show. But, they need to be coupled with other things like a regimented exercise routine and rest if you want to excel.

Venerando: Great advice. What tips would you give to someone just starting out in bodybuilding?

Tommi: Learn the basics of weight lifting, do research, and practice proper form. Remain natural and consistent, and the gains will come.

Venerando: Do you have any pre- or post-workout rituals to help you stay focused on your fitness goals?

Tommi: Before I start working out, I consume oatmeal and peanut butter. During my workout, I sip on a pre-workout drink, and immediately after, I consume creatine.

Venerando: In what ways do you think bodybuilding can positively impact someone's life?

Tommi: Bodybuilding teaches discipline, resilience, patience, and structure. It helps you become more in tune with your body and refine these attributes, ultimately making you a better person.

Venerando: What challenges have you faced while on this journey of bodybuilding?

Tommi: There have been many challenges, such as balancing my military career, recovering from injuries, and maintaining a strict diet. But I remind myself of my aspirations and keep going.

Venerando: How do you stay motivated and consistent with your workouts?

Tommi: I ask myself why I'm doing this, and since it's a personal choice, I continue to pursue the best version of myself.

Venerando: What tips can you offer on proper form and technique when performing exercises?

Tommi: Get a knowledgeable coach who's invested in helping you learn the fundamentals.

Venerando: What do you believe are the biggest benefits of pursuing bodybuilding?

Tommi: From a natural standpoint, the benefits include living a healthy, long life and having the potential to positively impact others.

Venerando: How would you rate the balance of diet versus exercise for optimal performance?

Tommi: They go hand in hand. A proper diet will yield optimal performance, just as exercise complements a good diet.

Venerando: What advice would you give to someone looking to compete in a bodybuilding event?

Tommi: Exercise due diligence and hire a coach to lay the foundation for you.

Venerando: Do you follow a specific supplement regime or diet to ensure your best performance?

Tommi: Yes, I focus on consuming the right balance of protein, fats, and carbohydrates, combined with a daily workout routine. Each person's body is different, so it's important to find what works best for you.

Venerando: How do you view the science and art of bodybuilding in relation to achieving your goals?

Tommi: Science teaches us what works and what doesn't, while bodybuilding is the art of sculpting and displaying your body. Understanding and applying both the science and art of bodybuilding will lead to success.

Venerando: What are some common mistakes new bodybuilders make when starting out?

Tommi: They often rush to see results, adopt bad habits and exercise forms, or purchase a bunch of supplements without understanding their effects or proper usage.

Venerando: How do you stay mentally focused for competitions?

Tommi: Proper rest, diet, and the right supplements help me stay focused. I also clear my mind before exercising and avoid distractions, like my phone, during workouts.

Venerando: How has your approach to training and nutrition evolved over time?

Tommi: As I gained experience, I learned more about what makes my body perform at its best. The sport is constantly evolving, with new research emerging on exercise and nutrition. I try new things and adapt my methods accordingly, always remembering the fundamentals.
